“Collecting art demands passion and engagement. It also demands courage, knowledge, feeling, affinity and a strong vocation for hearing the voice of the artist, which is often a language that sounds so familiar, yet cannot be spoken by others.”
- George Wong, Founder of The Parkview Museum
For the past fifty years, Parkview Group has supported the development of Chinese art, and has created a large, multifaceted art collection known for its international vision and global profile. As a reflection of the belief that art collections should be shared with the public, Parkview Group has constantly provided a global platform to promote artistic and cultural exchange through a vibrant program of cultural activities.
The exhibition WELCOME TO PARKVIEW GREEN III – Parkview Contemporary Art Collection is the third in a series of exhibitions on The Parkview Collection. The first two editions of the exhibition series focused respectively on Chinese and Italian Contemporary art, while the current exhibition features selected works by artists from China, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Russia, presenting artistic practices, living experiences, philosophical systems and social concerns among artists from similar generations but different cultural backgrounds. While providing Chinese and international artists with a platform for cultural exchange, the exhibition provides the audience with multiple paradigms through which to interpret and grasp the intriguing narratives created by the artists.
The outbreak of Covid-19 and the global social crisis it caused brought the “big picture” back into the realm of discussion. We can no longer ignore the shared fate of humanity and are realizing how we are inextricably linked to our environment. Even the most independent individuals are still social beings, and they still exist within the complex structure of relationships with nature, society, time, and space. Thus, this exhibition places humanity at its core. Some of the participating artists take an abstract, subjective, and introspective approach to the exploration of the individual’s psychological condition and existential experience in contemporary society. Others employ an objective, concrete, and critical orientation as they question the role of the individual within the macro-context of the world system.
Regardless of their different approaches, through the metaphorical language of contemporary art, the artists carry out an exploration of the social, historical, and cultural transformations which are ceaselessly altering the roles of human beings and their relationships with their surrounding space.
Blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination, the artists in this exhibition articulate dichotomies between the realms of the natural and artificial, illusionary and real, physical and mental, material and spiritual, rational and irrational. While retaining personal artistic language and practice imbued with their cultural specificity, they manage to elaborate translational narratives to explore the complexity of our existential experience and convey universal messages about our relationship with the world around us.
