Michelangelo Pistoletto is an Italian artist, whose complex and ethically engaged oeuvre has played a determinative and central role in European art over the last half of the century. He manifests basic concepts of the vocation of the ‘speaking artist’, who creates poetic, powerful and important visual metaphors of essential spiritual values to conduct and guide social orientation, human attitudes as well as participation in society.
In A meditation place of multi-religion and secularity (Luogo di Raccoglimento Multireligioso E Laico), Pistoletto builds his transparent and rigorously structured spiritual architecture installation based on his predecessors of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. This work houses symbols of world religions and intellectual orientations, akin to his predecessors who created cathedrals, universities, libraries and museums as sites of spiritualities, meditation, the study of writings about the universe and our behaviours in the labyrinth of life. This ‘labyrinth’ also alludes to elements of enigma, revelation, surprise and emotional participation in hidden realities, spiritual and intellectual reflections, which as also part of the aesthetic experience.
